P R E M I S EYou were just walking down the street.
In class.
In a subway car.
In a mecha battle.
And then, you took a turn -- stood to leave -- the doors opened -- the gunfire faded -- and suddenly you were surrounded by thick rolling fog. Stretching out in all directions, blinding you to almost everything but the road beneath your feet.
Follow it. Or don't; it doesn't matter.
Silent Hill has found you.
And it may never let you go.
S E T T I N G"Silent Hill, a quiet little lakeside resort town. We're happy to have you. Take some time out of your busy schedules and enjoy a nice restful vacation here. Row after row of quaint old houses, a gorgeous mountain landscape, and a lake which shows different sides of its beauty with the passing of the day, from sunrise to late afternoons to sunset. Silent Hill will move you and fill you with a feeling of deep peace. I hope your time here will be pleasant and your memories will last forever."

So claim the sightseeing brochures in every convenience store and gift shop. But unless you hold no darkness in your heart -- unless you are a complete innocent -- the town you will find yourself in bears no resemblance to a quiet little lakeside resort town.
Instead, you might wander through the streets of "misty" Silent Hill, where fog enshrouds the town and the gray light of day never completely fades into night. Snow may be falling. All is still here, silent, as peaceful as a grave, and things seem almost normal -- but there may still be the occasional monster lurking around the corner.
Or you might be unlucky enough to find yourself in "dark" Silent Hill, where the fog has lifted only to be replaced by an endless unnatural night. Rain may be falling. You'll want a flashlight to see your nose in front of your face, but be careful pointing it at your surroundings because you're going to receive a nasty shock. The very earth beneath your feet has gone, replaced by rusted metal grating and below it, black abyss. Doors and decorations have either become distinctly sinister or disappeared completely. Monsters are everywhere, even in packs, and something about the interminable night seems to have made them much more vicious.
It all depends on who you are... and what you've done.
And just when you think you've adjusted to
your nightmare, beware: the other people around you all see something different, and spending time around them may sometimes plunge you into
theirs.
